MCHP is happy to offer long-acting reversible contraception in our offices. Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is the most effective form of reversible birth control.

What is a LARC? Long-acting reversible conception (LARC) is birth control that provides long-term pregnancy prevention. LARCs provide protection for three to 10 years or more, depending on the birth control brand. LARCs come in two forms, a device your provider inserts into your uterus and a device your provider implants into your arm. Your provider can remove the device if you decide you’d like to become pregnant. Unlike condoms, LARCs don’t protect you from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
What are the different kids of LARCs? There are two types of LARCs, intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants. An IUD is a small, plastic T-shaped device that your provider inserts in your uterus. There are copper IUDs and hormonal IUDs. Various brands are FDA-approved to prevent pregnancy. An implant is a matchstick-sized plastic rod that your provider places in the inner part of your upper arm. Nexplanon® is the only FDA-approved implant currently used. It prevents pregnancy for three years. Nexplanon is the updated version of an earlier implant called Implanon. Copper IUDs are effective for 10 years and hormonal IUDs are effective for 8 years.
How do I get an Appointment for a LARC? Call any of our clinics or 828-682-8588, and we will get you scheduled for an appointment. We have appointments available.
What if I can't get off work to make it to clinic? We have appointments available after 5pm and also on Saturdays. Give us a call and we will find a time that works for you.
What if I want to get pregnant later on? LARCs are a great option for people who want to get pregnant in a year or more. Your medical provider can remove the LARC at anytime.
Will my insurance cover this? Most insurance plans will provide coverage for contraception including LARCs. If your insurance does not, then we will provide the LARC to you for free.
I don't have Insurance. Is that a problem? No Problem. Thanks to grant funding from DHHS, we are able to provide LARCs at no cost to you. In regard to the cost of the visit, we can get you signed up for our sliding fee program. We will not turn anyone away for inability to pay.
What if I am uncertain, can I talk to someone? Yes, you can make an appointment with a medical provider to come in and discuss your options, or you can make a virtual appointment if you have a smart phone, tablet, or computer. We may be able to provide you with the LARC of your choice that same day, or you may want to take time to think on it. We will do what is best for you.
